Best Tips for a Headshot!

We can all agree that having the best portrait of ourselves is a must have, right! In order to stand out with competitive artists and allow you to showcase your personality we must be prepared. How many of you enjoy getting dolled up once in a while just for yourself? Getting the chance to be creative and preparing for your headshots is a tremendous boost of confidence. When you are happy inside it will reflect on the outside. Let’s begin by taking in the best tips for a headshot!

How to prepare for your headshot session?

  • What to wear – You want to select an outfit that represents your brand color. Avoid bold patterns, prints, and logos as it will be distracting to the eye in the photograph. I love when clients get creative with textures. Don’t be afraid to change it up! Always bring a few extra pair of items as backup to any session. Just in case you spill something on your outfit or you get sweat stains if shooting outdoors. Sometimes this happens and it’s always great to be prepared.
  • Hair and makeup –  Gentlemen first, come groomed and looking sharp. We want to make sure you are feeling your best and what better way than a fresh cut. Ladies we all know makeup and hair can get pricey. However, it is the BEST tool you can use for your session. Best tips for a headshot is to be sure to do a trial run with your makeup artist to ensure you love it the day of your shoot.
  • Jewelry / accessories / props – Some of my favorite things to go over with a client are the drum roll please…. accessories. Again adding textures and color to your already gorgeous self is a must. So be creative with this one and don’t shy away from your normal go to jewerly items. Ask a family member or even a friend to borrow new jewelry that works with your outfits. Props are extremely fun to use as well, especially if you have multiple wardrobes. Ideas: books, coffee mugs, business cards, glasses, purses/bags, scarfs, and anything with your logo or that represents your personality. Exist boisterously!
  • Speak to the photographer about location – I highly recommend staying in communication with your photographer at least once a week before your session to ensure you both are on the same page with the concept of your photo shoot. Location is everything and in my eyes it will allow you and the photographer to make your portraits stand out. Be specific with your goals for your session and how you want to represent your brand or business. Most photographers have their spots, so be sure to check them out before arriving.

Why headshots are important?

The reason why I am giving best tips for a headshot is simple this, you can use them to promote your business in a professional way. Imagine sharing your business on social media so everyone can see your amazing work, and suddenly you post a brand new headshot introducing yourself to the community. BAM, your engagement will sky rocket, because what is one thing everyone is interested in learning about your business other than your products, YOU! So don’t let that little guy/girl stuck in your head stop you from taking this opportunity and growing with it.

You can also gain NEW clients and continue building relationships with your already established clients by simply showing a fresh face.  Clients love to see you shinning that bright light of yours and what better way to express your confidence through brand new headshots. You can use these best tips for a headshot as a guide to help your business grow. We all know how important growth is to any business, so always remember to look back on these portraits as time goes by. It’s a wonderful reminder of how hard you worked and how far you’ve come to live your wildest dreams.

What to avoid doing before your photo shoot?

We know it’s the night before the photo shoot and you are feeling all types of nerves. However, going out drinking the night before is a huge mistake, so make sure you avoid it even if you’re nervous. We want to avoid any inflammation in the face, body, and overall mindset. Another best tip for a headshot is to limit going to the beach and getting heavy tan lines or burns, can you say editing nightmare. Be smart and conscious that everything is shown in a photo and editing takes time for photographers. We all know we want those photos ready as soon as possible, so let’s be sure to follow the best tips for a headshot and make your session memorable!

How to find the best photographer for you?

DO your RESEARCH. That is the best advice I can give anyone looking for a photographer. Look online and verify they have a website, check their social media, and even give them a call or shoot them an email. See how communicative they are and if it flows / vibes match with the style you are looking for. If you fall in love with their vibes, price is right, and you just feel like they are the one than I highly recommend booking them ASAP! Photographers work on various schedules, so always give yourself and them a good month or two of planning for a session.
