It’s a number that holds so much meaning in our culture, and even more in our hearts. It’s a celebration of a young girl stepping into womanhood, of memories made, and dreams that are just beginning to bloom.
But for me, this year’s quinceañera portrait session was more than just another booking—it was deeply personal.
I recently had the honor of photographing my niece for her quince portraits. We chose the beautiful city of Austin, Texas, where she stood radiant in a soft blue satin mini dress. The backdrop? The trendy and picturesque QUINCE Lakehouse restaurant, perched right over the water with a breathtaking view. As if the setting wasn’t already perfect, an iconic vintage teal Cadillac with the top down sat out front like it was placed there just for us. It felt cinematic. Dreamy. Meant to be.
As I snapped each photo, I couldn’t help but feel a lump in my throat. This wasn’t just any session this was our journey. You see, I’ve been capturing my niece through my lens since she was just four years old. One of her very first photo shoots with me featured her sitting on the hood of a red vintage Mustang, sipping Coca-Cola through a straw, wearing a yellow cardigan and polka dots bright-eyed, full of giggles, and completely unaware of how fast time would fly.
And now, here she was: elegant, graceful, and still glowing with that same spark she’s had since she was little. The only difference is that now, she knows exactly who she is becoming.
As a photographer, these are the moments that breathe life into my work. It’s not just about beautiful lighting or stunning locations it’s about connection. It’s about watching people grow, evolve, and transform in front of your camera. It’s about freezing time, so that years from now, we can look back and remember how it all felt.
